Makis Mavridis, a chemist and enologist, founded Alpha Estate in 1997. After working across Greece, he decided to put down roots of his own in the Amyndeon appellation of Macedonia, Greece. Today, the next generation, Emorfili Mavridou and Angeliki Iatridou, are at the helm of the winery. They work 220 hectares of sustainably-farmed vines. The "Axia" blends Greece's native Xinomavro grape with luscious Syrah, creating a wine that is dry and medium-bodied with lots of freshly snipped herbs, dried bay leaf, and black fruit.
